The Therapeutic Use of Puppets

Date: 24th April 2021 LIVE ONLINE COURSE Fee: €110
This one day course is an ideal opportunity for therapists, teachers, early years practitioners, family support workers, and other professionals working with children, to learn more about the therapeutic use of puppets. Parents and carers can join in the puppet fun too, these ideas can be adapted to use at home too! This is an experiential workshop, packed full of practical tips and ideas, to aid professionals in making therapeutic use of puppets in their work with children and young people.
This innovative training day will explore the mechanics of how puppets work therapeutically, explore storytelling with puppets as a therapeutic process, and model simple puppet designs. Participants will also learn effective puppet techniques to help bring puppets to life. You will leave energised and ready to use puppetry more dynamically in your work, confident about how puppetry can complement the work you are already doing, and full of fresh ideas ready to put into practice.
Content during this training day includes:
  1. The mechanics of puppet play – learn how to bring your puppet to life!
  2. Puppet techniques to help with big feelings such as anger, worry and sadness.
  3. Puppet techniques to foster the development of important social skills, build empathy and friendships.
  4. Creating healing stories with puppets.
  5. Creating a puppet to support a child with a specific need .
This course is suitable for play therapists, psychotherapists, teachers, family support workers, occupational therapists, social workers, parents and carers, and other professionals working with children and teenagers.
This workshop is experiential so log in with your own puppet, if you have one, and Edel will bring hers also. We will be making a puppet on the day so please gather materials from the list below!

Course Times: 10am – 5pm,

Space and technology requirements:
  • Sound cancelling headset or confidential room to participate in
  • A computer or other suitable device (e.g. i pad), ideally, but not essentially, with built in (or external) microphone and camera.
  • Uninterrupted Wi-Fi connection
Creative Materials:
  • Wooden spoon
  • Colourful sock
  • Glue gun or tape
  • Glitter
  • Felt
  • Feathers
  • Markers
  • Ribbon, wool, string
  • 2x Paper plates (large and small)
  • 2x Large lollipop stick
Any other materials that you would like to add to make your puppet are very welcome.
All participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Course Facilitator:
Edel Lawlor is a child and adolescent psychotherapist specialising in play therapy, she also has qualifications in; Sand Tray Therapy, Social Care, Therapeutic Art and Theraplay. Edel has over 20 years experience of working therapeutically with children and families from a variety of backgrounds, setting up her own centre, 'Expressive play', in Kilflynn, Co. Kerry in 2005. Edel has supported children and parents through one to one therapy and also group workshops. She has developed several school programmes for children to enhance self-esteem and cope with transitions such as secondary transition. Edel also provides training for students and professionals working with children in; Child protection, Therapeutic play skills, The effects of domestic violence on children, Understanding parenting struggles and supporting parents, Parenting on the path of recovery and many more. Alongside these, Edel facilitates her own parenting support programme 'Creative parenting'. Edel's work has been acknowledged at local and national level and published in a chapter in 'Parenting in Modern Ireland' in 2015
