Playful Pandemic Parenting
Part One: Is Playing Really Enough?

16th February, 7:30pm-9pm ONLINE TRAINING COURSE Fee: €30
Facilitator: Siobhán Prendiville B.Ed, M.Ed., MA Psychotherapy and Play Therapy, Mommy!

Parenting is challenging, parenting during a pandemic is.... extra challenging! It is hard. Parents are juggling work life, home life, learning at home, whilst also trying to manage the uncertainty and other stresses that living through a pandemic brings. And they are doing all of this without access to their regular supports. Wow, that is a lot. Meanwhile our children are living through the same pandemic, trying to adapt to remote learning, missing friends and regular routines. Many children and teenagers are experiencing the stress and the uncertainty that Covid-19 brings too. With stress levels so high, and energy levels dipping, we have decided to put together a series of short online courses for parents and carers, and for those supporting parents and carers. These will be delivered in bite sized pieces. Each session will last an hour and a half and will explore playful approaches to parenting that support connection and relationship, reduce stress and increase fun!! As Bessel van der Kolk says “The parent-child connection is the most powerful mental health intervention known to mankind.” Parents and children alike need this right now. In part one of this series we will look closely at play and tease out exactly why it is so powerful, and why it is definitely enough! You will leave with lots of new ideas to try out at home, or to suggest to the parents and carers your support in your work.

This innovative training session will introduce participants to some of the key therapeutic powers of play, including attachment formation, relationship enhancement, stress management, and accelerated psychological development. We will explore ways for parents and carers to harness these powers at home to increase connection with their children, to reduce stress and to foster learning through play. We will tackle the tricky subject of “learning from home” and consider when it might be time to press pause and play! The course is designed to equip parents and carers with tools for themselves and their children. Throughout the session, we will explore creative and playful ways to support and connect you and your children.

This course is most suitable for parents and carers of pre-school and primary school children, and for those supporting parents and carers.

Topics explored will include:
  • An introduction to the therapeutic powers of play
  • An overview of different types of play
  • Play ideas to support parent-child connection
  • Play ideas to support learning at home
  • Play ideas to reduce stress and increase fun and laughter!
Participants are required to have,
Space and technology:
  • Sound cancelling headset or confidential room to participate in
  • a computer or other suitable device (e.g. i pad), ideally, but not essentially, with built in (or external) microphone and camera.
  • Uninterrupted Wi-Fi connection
And if possible, creative materials that include:
  • blank A4 sheets and a scissors
  • art materials - g. crayons, colouring pencils, markers
  • balloons (if possible)
  • a straw and 3-4 cotton wool balls
  • a large bowl of water and washing up liquid
Before the training, participants will receive handouts that they can print out to use in the training. All participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.
