  • Part 1: Philosophy and Stage Development in Experiential Play Therapy (EPT)
  • Part 2: Experiential Play Therapy and the 4S’s of Trauma Expression and Healing with Children
1st May 2021, 3pm – 6.15pm
Philosophy and Stage Development in Experiential Play Therapy (EPT)
The philosophical foundation of Experiential Play Therapy (EPT) will be described and applied to each of the identifiable stages and phases within this play therapy model. All aspects of EPT are to enhance the availability and receptibility of children to facilitate their play expressions toward integrative change. The therapist enters the depth of the child’s sensory and emotional world and through the child’s play process allows the child to shift their neurological pathways toward a sense of security and self-regulation.
Content:
  1. The basic philosophy and tenets of the EPT model will be described, discussed, and applied to play therapy.
  2. The stages incorporated in EPT will be identified, described, and the purpose of each stage will be discussed and applied to the progression of play therapy.
  3. The importance of the therapeutic relationship in the EPT model will be explained, discussed in detail, and applied to the play therapy process.
  4. EPT is a second-order change model of therapy. This process will be explained, discussed for children, and demonstrated with examples.
  5. Children talk in metaphors. This process will be explained, discussed for children, and demonstrated with examples.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
  • List five assumptions that underlie the EPT model
  • Identity, describe, and give a behavioral goal in each stage of EPT
  • State four benefits of the therapeutic relationship in EPT
  • Describe the process of second-order change in EPT
  • Identify a child expressed metaphor and identify a possible meaning in play therapy
2nd May 2021, 3pm – 6.15pm
Experiential Play Therapy and the 4S’s of Trauma Expression and Healing with Children
Children deal with trauma in a very developmental and individualized manner. Trauma in EPT is viewed as sensory dis-regulation. When children experience the dynamics of trauma, they do not own their bodies. They create a defense system in order to ward off the constant threat of loss and feelings of emotional annihilation. When these fears are validated and expressively conveyed to the child in the developmental stage they were inflicted, the child responds with incredible presence and intensity. This process allows the child to experience their threats in a safe environment and in the context of a secure relationship. Children can experience themselves in the Sensory, Somatic, Surging, and eventually the Soothing manner that their neurological system has been seeking since trauma invaded their body.
Content:
  1. Identifying and describing regressive developmental behavior, by a child in play therapy, that indicates the level of brain development when the trauma event was experienced
  2. Identifying characteristics in each phase of the 4S’s sensory patterns
  3. Assessing and confirming the internal pain response of a child confronting a trauma experience in the body or behavior.
  4. Describing the sequence patterns of the 4S’s process and how a child indicates change in this process.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
  • Describe five sensory indicators of regressive behavior
  • Give, in progressive order, one indicator of sensory patterns in each phase of the S’s process
  • Name three indicators of trauma dynamics of a sensory or emotional nature
  • Describe and assess the progress patterns that indicate a change process in the child in regard to the sequence patterns of the 4S’s process
