Story Building and Storytelling for Therapists, Teachers, & Carers
Professor Sue Jennings

Dates: 6th May and 13th May Course Times: 2pm-5pm Fee: €110

This innovative, fun, and experiential online training course, facilitated by Dr. Sue Jennings, introduces participants to a new system called ‘Story Building’ for creating and building stories that can be a part of therapy, education or parenting. Stories are an important part of life in all cultures. They can be told to inform, resolve and to re-assure. They can contribute to the building of attachments. They can be created as therapeutic stories, for gaining insight and understanding, or shared for building communities. Participants will gain experience in storymaking throughout the course and the stories will be utilised to enhance group learning.

Every culture has a rich heritage of myths, legends, fairy stories and plays, and many have survived for millions of years. Archaeologists have discovered paintings and carvings on cave walls which depict symbolic events or real happenings. People also create new stories, or adapt old ones for new settings, and encourage clients or pupils to tell stories. These stories may be very near to their own lives or may have a metaphoric connection but provides some safety from feelings of exposure.
A main aim of this course is to encourage people to maximise their use of storytelling with people of all ages. The content will be flexible so that it can be adapted for individual or group work, and for variations in age. Dr. Sue usually talks about ‘Nought to Ninety’ so, whatever your client group, professional context, or role with those for whom you might create and utilise stories there will be valuable learning for you!

Participants will be introduced to the use of circle diagrams and will consider physical, imagery and role aspects in storymaking. These diagrams introduce a new system which moves away from a linear approach to telling or creating stories and shows there can be several starting points – including the landscape or the season or the core conflict. The course explores the use of breathing and mindfulness as a prequel to a new story, physical and sensory stories, and the creation and building of stories that can be a part of therapy, education or parenting.

The course will be spread over 2 half days so that participants have time to reflect and consolidate in-between and have time to bring questions from their own practice, education setting or family. The course will enhance everyone’s skills and enable them to feel more confident and competent in making effective use of stories and storytelling.
