Therapeutic Storytelling with Edel Lawlor 10.10.26

In this workshop, Edel will share her approach to writing therapeutic stories and demonstrate how to extend them through creative activities such as art, puppetry, play, and imaginative exploration. She will also explore significant stories and storytelling approaches used by innovators and experts in the field. Together, participants and Edel will take a deep dive into the beautiful process of creating and using stories therapeutically. The day will include plenty of practical ideas, inspiration, and opportunities to develop your own storytelling skills.

About The Training

As a child and adolescent psychotherapist Edel Lawlor has been writing therapeutic stories for many years to help children understand their emotions, process difficult experiences, and discover their own strengths. Storytelling offers a gentle and creative way to connect with children, giving them language, hope, and new perspectives.

During the day we will explore:

  • The Therapeutic use of Folklore and fairy tales
  • Eileen Prendiville’s “Therapeutic Touchstone” story
  • Stories to support children in making sense of their world
  • Writing therapeutic stories
  • Lessons from Nancy Davis
  • Creating psychoeducational stories for children
  • Developing your voice for story telling
  • Practical activities, discussions and creative activities throughout the da

This training is suitable for trainee and qualified play therapists, psychotherapists, counsellors, expressive and creative arts therapists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals working within the range of psychotherapeutic modalities with clients of all ages.

Materials & Resources Needed
  • Sound cancelling headset or confidential room to participate in – the content is not suitable for children.
  • a computer or other suitable device (e.g. i pad), ideally with built in (or external) microphone and camera. Participants will be asked to keep their camera on during the training.
