Medical trauma can be experienced by many children who have undergone medical procedures or experienced chronic and acute conditions. This one day live online workshop will explore ways we can help children who have experienced medical trauma in the therapy room. The day will also explore how to support parents and carers by showing them ways to help at home or during hospital stays. This promises to be a very playful day with lots or experiential activities and rich stories from practice shared by the one and only Edel Lawlor.

This innovative live online workshop will introduce participants to medical trauma, and a wide variety of therapeutic approaches that can support children and families navigating medical trauma. During the day we will explore:

• Medical trauma & medical play – theory and practice
• Recommended Medical Play Kit and games
• Neuroscience and Dr. Bruce Perry’s deep wisdom
• The magical Ambulance technique
• Bandages and big hurts
• Working with children with cancer
• The use of therapeutic stories

Participants are required to have,

Space and technology:

• Sound cancelling headset or confidential room to participate in – the content is not suitable for children.
• a computer or other suitable device (e.g. i pad), ideally with built in (or external) microphone and camera. Participants will be asked to keep their camera on during the training.
• Uninterrupted Wi-Fi connection

Edel is the founder and Director of Expressive play, a child and adolescent therapy centre. Edel has over 20 years experience working in a variety of therapeutic support roles with both children and adults. Edel has an a MA in Psychotherapy and Play Therapy and has also trained in Sandplay Therapy, Art Therapy, Puppetry and Social Care. She has a unique blend of experience in a variety of roles including; play therapy, integrative psychotherapy, family therapy, parent support and teaching. Edel is a highly skilled, and natural, therapist and trainer, she truly is a joy to learn from.

Edel teaches on our Level 6 Therapeutic Play Skills Certificate and also designs and facilitates a range of our CPD training events. Edel specialises in facilitating workshops in our series of training events which support the diversification of practice by play therapists and other suitably qualified professionals, including teachers, psychotherapists, social workers, psychologists, early years teachers, family support workers and project workers.

All participants will receive a Certificate of Completion for CPD purposes after the training.

5.5 Play Therapy Credit Hours (Note: Play therapy credit will not be awarded to non-mental health professionals.)

Cancellations: Non-refundable booking deposit of €50. Full fee is non-refundable in the event of cancellations within 14 days of the course. You can nominate another person to attend in your place.
