Online Course: Cancer – Shining a light on working with children and families affected by cancer

Today we had great fun playing “Covid Busters!” I normally facilitate some ghostbuster play around Halloween, but this year I decided to change it up and turn it into Covid busting play instead!

We made Covid Busting Superheroes by decorating bottles and filling them with vinegar. We represented Covid with balls of fizzing dough. And then we busted that Covid. Our “Covid Control” test tubes and droppers came in handy too! These were filled with vinegar too.

It was great fun and a great way to play around with any fears and worries about Covid. As @maliecoyne says “play loosens fear”! When faced with hard things play always helps. We laughed a lot too, and laughter gets those happy hormones flowing! Fighting fears and laughter, a winning combination.

To make the fizzing dough you mix approx 1/2 cup of cornflour, 1/2 cup of baking soda and a 1/4 cup of hair conditioner. We added a bit of food colouring too and an extra sprinkle of baking powder before the Covid busting spray! You can see us in action in my stories.

Today’s Halloween play, spooky sensory bottles! Sensory bottles are always a hit here. They are fun to make and calming to look at too. We added some Halloween themed props to our normal glitter bottle recipe today, and we are thrilled with the results! You can see us making them in my stories.

What you need: An empty bottle (we use VitHit bottles), 125g clear glue gel, warm water. glitter, halloween themed sprinkles, spiders, googly eyes etc..

Step 1: Pour the glue into the bottle.

Step 2: Add the glitter.

Step 3: Add the Halloween sequins and props.

Step 4 : Fill the bottle with warm water.

Step 5: Shake, Shake, Shake! Your bottle needs a good Shake first time round!

Now you can enjoy your sensory bottle over and over again.

Spider themed Hallowe’en play today! We had fun with spider web walks, and enjoyed cracking and dissolving the frozen spider eggs we made yesterday. We made our own playdough and turned it into spiders. We finished off with a little science experiment, we made “spider gas” to inflate some balloons! You can see more in my Instagram stories. With trick or treating off the cards this year we have more reason than ever to play together at Halloween. Hope you find some of the ideas helpful. Happy playing to all!
