How It All Began

The Children’s Therapy Centre (CTC) is Ireland’s longest established & foremost provider of training in the field of Play Therapy, Therapeutic Play, and Creative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy. It all started many years ago, in the mid 1990’s when Eileen Prendiville began facilitating training courses around the country. Initially these courses were for those already qualified in counselling and psychotherapy but this quickly expanded into training a very wide range of professionals.Eileen has devoted her life to improving the lives of children, teenagers and families. She has an unrelenting passion for psychotherapy and play therapy, and an unwavering determination to ensuring that it is practised in the safest and most ethical way possible. Her phenomenal work for many, many years has significantly raised the standards for the practice of child and adolescent psychotherapy, utilising play therapy, and for the training of such therapists across Ireland, and beyond. Her contributions to the literature in this area are highly regarded.

The Growth of CTC

In 2004, Eileen launched CTC and continued delivering the high-quality training that she had been doing for many years. Eileen’s name, and that of CTC, quickly became highly recognisable across the country and indeed around the globe.

Eileen’s passion, determination, devotion and hard work are far reaching. Her influence is by no means limited to Ireland, she is undoubtedly a pioneer in the field of Creative Psychotherapy and Play Therapy.

The high standards she set have since become a hallmark of CTC.Eileen’s daughter, Siobhán, trained as a Psychotherapist and a Play Therapist at CTC and she has now taken over the reins from Eileen. Siobhán herself is highly acclaimed in the field of psychotherapy and play therapy. She is passionate about the therapeutic powers of play and the pivotal role the curative powers of play and relationships hold in developmentally appropriate, trauma informed and responsive work with children, teenagers and families.

In addition to running CTC, she also travels and presents widely both nationally and internationally. She has a keen interest in writing and has contributed chapters in many seminal texts in the field of child and adolescent psychotherapy and play therapy.

Where We Are Today

CTC has grown substantially over the years and are fortunate to have an incredible staff team, and a vast number of wonderful students and graduates. Our staff, our students, our graduates are at the heart of CTC.

From short courses to a full master’s degree, we offer professionally and academically recognised training.CTC’s MA in Creative Psychotherapy and Play Therapy provides a dual qualification for our graduates and leads to both national and international accreditation and registration. It equips graduates to practice developmentally appropriate, play therapy and psychotherapy, with children and adolescents, within a systemic framework that also responds to the needs of their adult caregivers in their roles.

We embed the full play therapy training within the psychotherapy training. This has been acknowledged and applauded by a wide range of professional accreditation and registration bodies. We operate to the very highest academic and professional training standards, fully meeting the standards set by Quality and Qualification Ireland (QQI); The Irish Association for Play Therapy and Psychotherapy (IAPTP); the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP) and the European Association of Integrative Psychotherapy (EAIP). CTC is a European Accredited Psychotherapy Training Institute.

In addition to our MA, we run introductory level training in therapeutic play, advanced practitioner awards for psychotherapists and other mental health professionals, and a wide range of CPD courses for therapists and other professionals working with children, teenagers and families. We also offer a variety of courses that are suitable for parents and carers. We run live online training events, in person training events, and we develop and deliver bespoke training for many organisations across the county and internationally. Life is indeed very busy at CTC, and we love it that way!! We are passionate and dedicated to ensuring CTC stays at the forefront of our field. We are excited for all that the future holds.
